Visiting another country with non-native language

Post by HikerShawn »

How do you all feel about visiting and touring other countries where the language isn't your own?

For example, going to Indian as an American or Brit and only speaking English.

Would this scare you? Make you not want to go? Or would you just wing it?

I think I would be a bit weary of traveling to a different country, I know we've got smart phones now and they could help us translate things but translation on phones still isn't good. I know there's also dictionaries you can get too, but even then it can be difficult to communicate with other people. I think it's a good idea to see if you could look into getting a guide while you're traveling in other countries to help you.

I've been using Babbel to learn German, Russian, and Spanish.

The German and Russian are just for fun. The Spanish could be helpful as America is getting more and more Spanish speakers.

So far, the app has been very helpful but I'm bad about trying to learn from it every day!

I would use Google translate to communicate between natives.
Examples – "¿Cómo Estás?" is Spanish for "How are you?"

I would likely use that if I had nothing else to work with.

Yeah I thought about using Google Translate but it's not accurate all the time lol. I think it might be worth learning a new language using Babble like Shawn is doing since not only do you get to learn a new skill, you don't have to rely on technology to help translate things for you or a book.
