How to fix a negative body image?

Post by Magdalene »

A negative body image is when you:
- Hate your reflection
- Obsess over your flaws
- Compare yourself constantly with others
- Feel ashamed about your size/shape .

The good thing is that it can be rewritten when you rewire your brain.

3 Body Image Myths to Forget

1. Avoid saying to yourself “I’ll always love my body when I lose weight”. To get out of this, self-acceptance must come first because weight loss might not fix it.

2. Avoid the notion that only young/skinny bodies are beautiful. This is Because beauty has no size, age, or shape.

3. Criticism motivates me. That's not true because self-hate creates stress and it can pose a great danger to our health.

7 Steps to Heal Your Body Image

1. Practice Body Neutrality, Not Just Positivity: Start by saying some affirmative words to yourself because you need to accept the skin you're in.

2. Curate Your Social Media: This is necessary because you need to unfollow the accounts that make you feel that you're not enough. Follow accounts that celebrate you.

3. Stop Body Checking: It's necessary to stop checking your body all the time. Stop pinching and staring at the mirrors every time. Say No to those things and distract yourself from negativity.

4. Wear Clothes That Fit Now: Don’t save nice clothes for when you are thinner. Where sizes that fit you and be confident about it.

5. Challenge Negative Thoughts: You must challenge negative thoughts like “My thighs are huge and ugly." This kind of thought will only weigh you down and make you hate yourself more.

6. Exercise Regularly: Engage in regular exercises to feel good about your body. It could be dancing or walking, just keep moving!

When to Seek Professional Help

It's important to contact a therapist if you start to avoid social events due to body shame or you start to harm yourself over your appearance.
